iPhone - One Week On (part 2)

In last weeks view on the iPhone I covered the first line of icons on the phone itself. These were SMS text messages, calendering, photos and the built in camera. This week I’m looking at the rest of the icons, the calculator, stocks and shares, Google Maps, weather, YouTube, notes, clock, system preferences and the new mobile iTunes. Those icons in the bar at the bottom, the main use of the phone, I’m going to leave till next week.

iPhone CalculatorUsing the calculator function on the iPhone brings back the memories of those old Texas Instruments calculators with the green 7 segment displays. There is nothing special about these, simply arithmetic operations with a memory function. I’ve used it several times just to quickly tot up something or other. It would be nice to see a slide down full function calculator being developed for the iPhone with various base settings, or maybe it’s just me.

iPhone StocksThis has to be something that I quite frankly don’t think I’ll ever use, Though it can be interesting to look at how a company has progressed over the last year. It would, I’m sure be of benefit to those into stocks and sharesor to keep an eye out for market trends quickly.

iPhone Google MapsThis is one application on the iPhone that I really do enjoy, and to see other peoples faces when the satellite imagery is displayed is priceless. We have a NIMUG meeting in Belfast at Windsor Tennis Club and the phone helped me find it off the Lisburn Road. I even tend to find myself at someplace and then use the iPhone to try and figure whereabouts I am, just a game of sorts. Now if they could show your location on the map without having to try and find it. GPS please.

iPhone WeatherThis is another little application that I thought wouldn’t be used all that often, but to my surprise, gets used all too often. Having the ability to have multiple weather screens I can see what the temperature is like at our Villa in Bulgaria and check if it would be nice to fly out to it. It’s also handy for planning any work in the garden, though in Belfast it mostly rains anyway. It can sometime be amazing when you have two locations on your phone within a close proximity, say 10 miles or so, and see the difference in weather conditions.

iPhone YouTubeI’m not too particular about YouTube, though I have enjoyed a few videos, but the rest of the family love it. There are a number of tutorials on there, some of them very well done. One of the kids is into Parkour, practicing efficient movements to develop one’s body and mind to be able to overcome obstacles. There are a whole bunch of training videos as well as people showing what they can do. Daniel and his friends have a number of their own videos on it and I do tend to show some people the crazy things that they do.

iPhone NotesThis is another one of those programs that you think won’t get used much, but now that I’ve had it for a we while, it getting more and more use. A friend of mine told me that he stores his serial numbers for applications on it and I’ve since started to do the same. This is really handy you have to reinstall your operating system. I even put my shopping list on it now.

iPhone ClockOkay, what can I say about this one. It’s a clock, but I have to admit, a very nice clock, or should I say clocks. You can have multiple clocks set and swipe your finger to show the next one. Multiple alarms can be set, each with their own ringing sounds. Also built into the clock function is a stop watch with lap counter function and a count down, great for getting those boiled eggs just right. Not too hard and not too soft, perfect.

iPhone PreferencesThis is where all the internet, phone connections are stored as well as default phone and message sounds. You have the ability to select your wallpaper from here too. You can choose from one of the provided or any of your photos. All the preference options for each of the applications on your phone is accessed from here to. Everything is so easy to get to and control you wish that all device makers would take a page from Apples way of doing things.

iPhone iTunesThis is a great addition to the iPhone, mobile iTunes. As soon as it was downloaded and installed I went and purchased my first album, Queen and It’s a kind of magic. It worked great, and when connected back to my laptop the songs were copied onto it together with the album art.

Having the ability to hear a song on the radio and say, “I really love that, if only I can remember the name when I get home.” Now I just quickly look it up on the spot and download it, then and thenand get to listen to it straight away.

Well that’s it for this week and next week I’ll look at the application in the menu bar, till then, bye.

I have to admit that I’ve never owned an iPod of any description, never had enough music. Now that I have the iPhone my music collection is gradually getting larger. Although my movie collection for the iPhone is expanding somewhat at an alarming rate.
